Eddie Redmayne is known as the nicest guy in show biz, a pretty impressive title when you think of the pressure of living in the media spotlight and the constant attention a handsome chap with an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Bafta by the age of 34 receives.
Tom Hooper the director of The Danish Girl thinks Redmayne is ‘Hugh Jackman-level nice’.
Eddie was born and brought up in Westminster, London and attended Eton College, where he was in the same year as Prince William. He studied history of art at Trinity College, Cambridge and interestingly enough wrote his dissertation on the artist Yves Klein and his signature colour International Klein Blue, despite being colour blind.
Something else you might not know is that he has four siblings, two brothers, one half brother and a half sister, two who work in the The City, one a chartered surveyor and one the CEO of Harper Collins UK, so as a family they cover a wide gamut of professions. Plus the father was a well respected City figure, Chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald Europe, so you would never be short of professional advice in the Redmayne family, whether it be the arts or financial.
He began his acting career early in West End Theatre where it has always been a big advantage to start young, as so much depends on building recognition from a large audience early, so you can play big lead roles while still in your twenties. He enjoyed many roles in stage productions such as Red and Richard II, whilst playing supporting parts in films like Elizabeth, The Golden Age and The Other Boleyn Girl, before swiftly getting cast in bigger roles in My Week With Marilyn and most importantly as Marius Pontmercy in Les Miserables, directed by Tom Hooper, who he would work with again in The Danish Girl.
His performance as Steven Hawking in The Theory of Everything won him the Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Bafta for Best Actor which propelled him into the mainstream. As the maxim goes in Hollywood, if you play a role with a physical impairment or speech defect you are a shoe in for the Oscar, but Eddie was an incredibly popular choice with his spectacular rendition of the famous physicist.
It has also been recently announced that Eddie is to play Global Ambassador to Omega Watches. He appears thrilled by this as his father wore an Omega, as did celebrated astronaut Buzz Aldrin, sporting the Omega Speedster when he landed and walked on the moon in 1969.
Eddie recently married lovely PR executive, Hannah Bagshawe in 2014 and their daughter Iris was born in June 2016 and he has been papped many times pushing a pram around London town. To top this off he was awarded an OBE in 2015 and his starring role as Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts this year has received both critical and popular acclaim.
Eddie is well known for thoroughly researching his roles, meeting as many astronomers as he could while preparing for The Theory of Everything and spending days at London Zoo to prepare as a magizoologist in Fantastic Beasts. He confesses that much of this method acting zeal is based on the sheer joy of being able to meet such amazing people and learn so many new things, something his position as a lead actor gives him ample opportunity to do.
He does confess to suffering from nerves just as the camera starts, a fear that possibly galvanises him, perhaps this is why his acting is quite so inclusive. He is handsome, but appeals to both men and women, winning GQ’s Best-Dressed Man of 2016, and his sensitive charm means he is fast becoming one of the most popular British actors of his generation.
Look out for the truly wonderful Fantastic Beasts and his next film already in production, directed by Nick Park, where Eddie voices the lead character Dug in a British/French stop motion animation.
