The British Museum

The British Museum was founded in 1753, the first national public museum in the world with a simple mission statement “to preserve its collection for the use and benefit of the public who may have free access to view and peruse the same”.
In 1857 the new purpose built Museum opened with the Round Reading Room at its heart. Changes continued throughout the nineteenth century with the iconic development of the Great Court and the construction of the Norman Foster roof in 2000.
The World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre, open in 2014, provides world class facilities for visitors and researchers taking conservation and scientific management to a new level.
The British Museum is well known across the world for its collections documenting the great civilizations of the past but also continues to engage constantly with the present. Today it houses over eight million objects from every age and part of the globe and welcomes over six million visitors a year.
The Grenville Room Shop originally housed the library of Sir Thomas Grenville trustee of the Museum and the book cases, gallery and floor today remain under the protection of English Heritage. Product collections today reflect the Museum’s collections and also major seasonal Exhibitions and are designed to appeal to worldwide customers looking for exclusive unique items. All sales benefit the British Museum.
