England’s seafood is as fresh as you can get anywhere in the world. In the delightful Cornish village of Padstow, Rick Stein owns and runs four fish restaurants. At The Seafood Restaurant, a simple space with white walls and pale-wood floors, you can tuck into fish brought straight from the boat to the kitchen door.    

While chefs like Blumenthal are proof that England’s cutting-edge gastronomy is leading the world, sometimes the traditional ways are the best. As Chef Daniel Boulud, owner of Bar Boulud in Knightsbridge, says, “I love British gastropubs like Fergus Henderson’s St JOHN, in London’s Smithfield.” St JOHN led the revival of meaty, masculine foods and is one of the few places in the country you can order a whole suckling pig.

For greater simplicity still, investigate our traditional cafes. Michel Roux Jr, the two-Michelin-star chef at Le Gavroche, recommends The Regency Café in London’s Regency Street. “It’s the best old-style café in London – the perfect mug of tea, real brewed coffee, good bacon sarnie with a choice of breads and service with a smile.”

We take our wines and spirits seriously too. Berry Bros & Rudd, Britain’s oldest wine merchants, holds private dinners in their candle-lit 17th- century Napoleon Cellar, with wines from iconic estates introduced by the owners and winemakers themselves.
