The Modern Face of Scottish Craftsmanship

There is a powerful, almost tangible energy when two distinct worlds collide under a single, unified philosophy. In the world of luxury craft, heritage is often treated as a museum piece, something to be preserved exactly as it was. Yet, a recent and pioneering collaboration between independent cask broker Cask Trade, contemporary fashion designer Siobhan Mackenzie, and the forward thinking Nc’nean Distillery has turned this notion entirely on its head.

Bringing together the worlds of high fashion and sustainable distilling, this partnership celebrated a shared belief: heritage is at its most potent when it is actively, fearlessly reimagined. The result of this creative synergy is an exclusive, highly limited eight year old single cask single malt Scotch whisky, wrapped in a custom designed tartan label that tells a story of modern Scottish identity.

Designing the Cask Trade Tartan

For Siobhan Mackenzie, an award winning fashion designer who launched her eponymous label at just twenty one years old, tradition has always been a canvas for innovation. Born and raised on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands, Siobhan trained in traditional kilt making during her final year of fashion studies. Since then, she has become one of Scotland’s most visible contemporary designers, dressing global icons such as Justin Bieber, Sam Heughan, and Alan Cumming, and twice designing the official opening ceremony uniforms for Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

"There is so much synergy between my brand and what Cask Trade is doing," Siobhan explained during an exclusive tasting at Cask Trades offices along Regents Street. "It is something different and innovative within a very traditional industry. People often forget that both kilt making and whisky making are intensely collaborative crafts. From the first person in the process to the middle person and the final hands, every single stage requires immense knowledge, heritage, and hard work."

The label of this exclusive bottling features the newly minted Cask Trade Tartan, officially lodged with the Scottish Register of Tartans. Drawn directly from Cask Trade’s corporate aesthetic, the design utilises rich, deep purple and striking gold tones, emphasising metallic detailing that beautifully catches the light.

True to Siobhan's signature style of embedding subtle narratives within her textiles, the tartan contains a brilliant structural easter egg: a block of 20 purple threads sits directly alongside a block of 18 gold threads. This specific thread count seamlessly weaves the founding year of Cask Trade, 2018, into the very fabric of the design, ensuring the bottle remains a legacy piece.

Nc’nean’s Sustainable Spirit

To match a label with such a compelling aesthetic narrative, Cask Trade required a whisky of equal distinction. They found it on the remote Morvern Peninsula at Nc’nean Distillery, Scotland’s first 100% organic whisky distillery. Founded by Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean is a certified B Corp that achieved verified net zero carbon emissions for scopes 1 and 2, shattering industry timelines by reaching this goal twenty years ahead of target.

Nc’nean has consistently challenged old conventions. The distillery uses 100% organic Scottish barley, powers its stills using renewable biomass energy, and bottles its spirit in 100% recycled glass.

"We started with a mission to highlight sustainability in Scotch, but also to bring a modern take to a traditional industry," Annabel noted. "The tradition is incredible, we are absolutely standing on the shoulders of giants, but there is plenty of room for a modern version of Scotch. That applies to how we protect the planet, how we make the spirit, and how we present the final package."

Nc’nean is celebrated for its signature fruity and elegant spirit style, achieved through unusually long mashing times, slow fermentations, and creative experimentation with non standard yeast strains. The high, narrow cut of their stills yields a pure, texturally rich spirit that acts as a flawless canvas for cask maturation.

Decoding the STR Red Wine Cask

The chosen single cask for this collaboration is an eight year old single malt distilled in 2018, yielding a mere 306 bottles at a robust cask strength of 54.5% ABV. The maturation cask is an STR (Shaved, Toasted, and Re-charred) ex red wine cask made from American oak, which had previously held Spanish red wine.

For those uninitiated in the technicalities of modern maturation, the STR process can sound complex, but its impact on the flavour profile is profound. Mariella, representing Cask Trade, explained the science during the tasting:

"The STR process is not a typical wine cask finish where the wood can occasionally impart dry, overly tannic notes. By shaving the interior of the cask, we expose fresh wood. The subsequent toasting and intensive re-charring caramelises the residual red wine sugars deeply embedded in the oak. This process completely transforms the wood's influence, imparting a rich, spicy, and intensely fruity character rather than a drying wine influence."

The result is a whisky that punches far above its age statement. On the nose, it offers an inviting array of bright red berries and soft peach notes. The palate is balanced, marrying a buttery, creamy texture with vibrant spices, stewed fruits, and a soft, lingering touch of caramelised oak. It is an expressive, powerful dram that showcases the remarkable synergy between distillate and wood interaction.

Dismantling the Barriers of Whisky Culture

As the tasting progressed, the conversation turned toward the broader culture of wine and spirits, touching upon the artificial barriers that have long intimidated prospective drinkers. Both Siobhan and Annabel are passionate advocates for democratising luxury, actively pushing back against the elitism often associated with high end Scotch and heritage tailoring.

"We want to break down old barriers about who drinks whisky, when they should drink it, and how they should enjoy it," said Annabel. Nc’nean famously prints "drink it as you like" right on the side of their bottles, actively encouraging highballs, such as their signature 'Six' which is two parts whisky to four parts soda over ice.

A fellow writer, Ruchina came up with a great idea and a potential game changing cocktail concept: topping the fruit forward STR single cask with a premium, Pinot Noir dominant Champagne, from a house like Bollinger to create an ultra modern cocktail. The high natural acidity of quality Champagne would slice through the rich, buttery texture of the whisky, allowing the red fruit notes to sing without adding artificial residual sugars.

Our conversation drew a parallel back to the evolution of the kilt. Siobhan noted that the kilt itself was once an evolving garment, moving from the historical vegetable dyed 'great kilt' gathered over the shoulder to the modern two piece iterations we see today. "Nothing stands completely still," Siobhan stated. "There is room for the traditional kilt, and there is room for innovation. Understanding the foundational craftsmanship first is what gives you the authority to re-engineer it."

The Cask Trade x Siobhan Mackenzie x Nc’nean collaboration proves what can be achieved when independent British creatives align. It proves that sustainability, high design, and uncompromising quality are not mutually exclusive, but are rather the essential ingredients for the future of heritage luxury.
