I recently had the opportunity to delve into what makes Chateau Quintus a standout destination and why its wines deserve a place in our cellars.
Chateau Quintus, originally known as Château Tertre Daugay, underwent a significant transformation when it was acquired by Domaine Clarence Dillon in 2011. Renamed Quintus, symbolizing the fifth element or quintessence, the vineyard embarked on a journey to elevate its status in the competitive Bordeaux landscape.
The estate spans 28 hectares in the picturesque Saint-Émilion appellation, an area celebrated for its clay-limestone soils and favourable microclimate. This terroir provides the perfect conditions for cultivating Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two primary grape varieties at Quintus. Under the guidance of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the vineyard has seen a meticulous overhaul, focusing on sustainable practices and innovative techniques to enhance the quality of its wines.
Our visit to the Chateau Quintus was an experience that engaged all the senses. The estate's location offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Dordogne River and the surrounding rolling hills of Saint-Émilion. Château Quintus is the estate's flagship wine, a blend dominated by Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc. The 2016 vintage, one of the most celebrated, exhibits a deep ruby colour and a complex bouquet of blackberries, plums, and hints of cedar. On the palate, it reveals layers of ripe fruit, velvety tannins, and a long, elegant finish. This wine is a perfect embodiment of Saint-Émilion's terroir, showcasing both power and finesse. And it was without doubt a hit with us.
Le Dragon de Quintus, the second wine of the estate, is no less impressive. It offers a more approachable style, with a higher percentage of Merlot. The 2018 vintage presents vibrant aromas of red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, complemented by subtle notes of spice and vanilla. Its balanced acidity and smooth tannins make it a delightful wine for immediate enjoyment, while also possessing the potential to age gracefully.

I would be remiss not to mention the majestic dragon sculpture on the grounds of the estate. The sculpture is a striking fusion of art and nature. Crafted by a renowned artist, Mark Coreth, this magnificent bronze dragon, with its intricate scales and lifelike form, stands as a guardian of the vineyard. Its presence adds a mystical charm, reflecting the vineyard’s rich heritage and creative spirit. We were captivated by the dragon’s imposing yet graceful stance, which makes it a perfect symbol of strength and elegance. This enchanting sculpture not only enhances the vineyard’s aesthetic appeal but also embodies the passion and artistry that define Clarence Dillon Vineyard.
