Luxury Lakes And Watering Holes: Lake Como
They say ‘see Venice and die’. And whilst it’s true that whoever ‘they’ are say a lot, in that instance 'they' hit the nail on the head in terms of just how beautiful Italy’s city on the lagoon actually is, for us there’s another corner of the country- equally associated with water- that stole our heart first.
Indeed, ‘they’ should probably turn the phrase to look at Lake Como. A vast, majestic and largely unspoilt paradise spot, when compared with many of the other lakes in Italy it’s easy to see why this has long been the preferred destination for the stars. So where Maggiore has suffered from the picturesque but nonetheless purpose built developments in towns like Stresa, and Garda seems to be perpetually overcrowded, here thanks to the distance from shore to foothill, and the narrow roads dividing the two, much of the building work has involved renovating centuries-old villas- whether keeping that private purpose or being turned into boarding houses- and what new structures have arrived are largely out of sight, nestled on the water’s edge, with several accessible only by boat.
The result is a much more traditional, Italian-looking retreat when compared with many of its peers. And one that can’t help but charm. Winding streets meander through pristine villages, the likes of which appear to have remained untouched for aeons. Secluded trattorias offer incredible views to savour whilst relishing in succulent flavours and some of the world-famous wine grown in the wider region. A truly luxurious place full of relaxed opulence- less gaudy and more tasteful than many other lakes and their lower-end resorts. When visiting somewhere like this you need accommodation to match, so we’ve compiled the following recommendations of three villas, each to suit a different budget, all of which will ensure your stay is spent in the lap of luxury...
Villa Paradiso - from £15,171 per week - sleeps 14
You could be forgiven for thinking this was used as the set for James Bond’s recuperation in Casino Royale. It wasn’t, but nevertheless this elegant stately-home style villa defines Italian indulgence. Nestled right on the banks of the lake itself, close to the picturesque village of Limonta, and not far from the famous town of Bellagio (from which the Vegas casino takes its name), enjoy evenings relaxing under the pergola, get lost in its three wings, then take a refreshing dip in the private pool.
Vista Infinita - from £8,632 per week - sleeps 8
Less grandiose that Paradiso, nevertheless, with its rustic charm Infinita is a real rural retreat. Overlooking Como and Bellagio, the interior has been inspired by a traditional farmhouse- full of natural colours, dark woods and beautiful furnishings. In addition to the amenities you would expect- private pool, games room, dining and seating terrace- there’s also an in-house gym, and, perhaps most impressive, a wine cellar filled with Piemonte’s fines piquant, and bottles from all over the terroir.
La Luminosa - from £5,197 per week - sleeps 6/10
An elegant villa that fits in with the traditional aesthetic of the area, nearby Lezzeno village is offers a wonderful opportunity to experience local life, meanwhile the property itself provides enough distractions to keep you busy for an entire week. And that’s really just the delightful grounds, direct access to a pebble beach, and membership of the Bellagio Sporting Club included in the price. Inside you’ll find fantastic antique furniture, an array of balconied rooms, and a small lawned area. Those looking to experience the lake at night might want to check out a local restaurateur who offers fishing trips after dark too.
