‘Each year, The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet give almost 400 performances of heritage works, classic operas and ballets, contemporary work and new commissions to more than 600,000 audience members’
The Royal Opera House is home to two of the world’s most prestigious companies, The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet. The iconic West End venue is a stunning theatre with a plush red and gold Victorian auditorium with state of the art backstage technology, and the imposing glass and ironwork Floral Hall, renamed the Paul Hamlyn Hall, originally one of the flower markets from the old Covent Garden market.
Some of the most famous names in opera and ballet have, over the years, starred on the Covent Garden stage; Dame Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Placidó Domingo, Renée Fleming, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, Carlos Acosta and Darcey Bussell.
Each year, The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet give almost 400 performances of heritage works, classic operas and ballets, contemporary work and new commissions to more than 600,000 audience members with live performances being relayed to BP Big Screens around the country and screened in cinemas around the world almost 40 countries.
Visitors may take a backstage tour and see the artists at work in rehearsal, or highly skilled craftspeople making costumes or props and hats and jewellery. Each tour is a unique experience, also taking in the superb skyline view of London from the Amphitheatre Terra.
