Magnificent Valletta: Phoenicia Hotel and the Malta Arts Festival

Magnificent Valletta: Phoenicia Hotel and the Malta Arts Festival

Valletta, Malta’s capital and arguably the city with the world’s most iconic harbour, is being born again. New bars and restaurants have revitalised the eternally pretty but once staid streets, and major civil projects are transforming the town’s overall aesthetic whilst cleaning up facades in preparation for the impending honour of European Capital of Culture 2018. Despite the somewhat divisive title, in this instance it’s a fitting accolade considering the arts scene is also in rude health, with abundant local talent and significant international events.

Four Reasons To See 300: Rise of An Empire

Four Reasons To See 300: Rise of An Empire

March 7th saw the release of 300: Rise of An Empire. Inspired by the decidedly macho Frank Miller graphic novels, on the face of it this could be written off as simply just another comic book adaptation, albeit one of the large minority targeting a more adult audience.
We’d beg to disagree, though, and as such decided to offer a few comments on the matter. Without further ado then, we present the four reasons we're excited about the movie, eager to feast our eyes on the contents whilst gorging on an unhealthily-sized portion of that Hollywood-proper pre-requisite, popcorn.

Fatima Guerrout Autumn/Winter 2014/15 Collection

Fatima Guerrout Autumn/Winter 2014/15 Collection

Dandyism transgressed: the necktie in the feminine .
For her new Autumn/Winter 2014/15 Collection, Fatima Guerrout has subverted the supreme accessory of male dandyism: the necktie, which we find knotted around the waist of a lace dress as a belt to slim down the silhouette, or feminising a masculine suit. Balzac said that the necktie "helps us to judge the person wearing it." This season, it will reveal the women who choose it as an emblem of elegance.

Database Business: It Really Is All About You

Database Business: It Really Is All About You

This Time it’s Personal. It Really is All About You
The future of advertising, really the future of all business, social interaction, our quality of life and learning is about to be governed by algorithms. Rubbish I hear you say, we are in control of our lives, decisions, learning and future. Well, not for long unless we look very carefully at how we structure the internet and our collection of personal data over the next few years and tailor the code, that will soon run much of it, with an eye to ethics and quality of life over personal gain.

Basil Soda Fall Winter 2014 Collection

Basil Soda Fall Winter 2014 Collection

Experimental is the word of the season. The Fall-Winter RTW 2014 collection from BASIL SODA is an experiment of prints, and material work; with a casual take on the house’s DNA. The atelier was in a painterly mood this season bringing together a touch of illustration to the textiles. Abstract collages alongside linear drawings bring a fun sensibility to the table. A mixture of lush satins, supple leathers and a nod to menswear inspired textiles make up the structure. Another element that came into play was the idea of sportswear and an effortless way of dressing.
