BBC Proms

The world's greatest classical music festival, the BBC Proms have been going for well over a hundred years. The first Proms concert took place on 10 August 1895, organised by impresario Robert Newman, with the avowed intent of reaching a wider audience by offering popular programmes in an informal setting. In 1896 Newman offered Henry Wood conductorship of the first Proms season.

The Ashes Lord's

The Ashes Lord's

The second Test of the 2013 Ashes series takes the Australian and English cricketers to Lord's.

Lord's has long been seen as the 'Home of Cricket' and the game's spiritual 'headquarters'. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket.

Its owner, Marylebone Cricket Club, remains the guardian of both the Laws and the Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides perform a key role in promoting cricket in Britain and elsewhere.

Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix

Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix

The Hungarian Grand Prix dates back to 1936. The Formula One Grand Prix has been hosted at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród close to Budapest since its birth in 1985, when it was the first F1 race to be run behind the Iron Curtain.

2006 was the first year in which the Hungarian Grand Prix was run in wet conditions - this was the year when Nigel Mansell's 17-year-record of winning from 12th was broken, when Jenson Button took victory from 14th place on the grid.

The Austrian F1 Grand Prix

The Austrian F1 Grand Prix

The Austrian Grand Prix returns to the Formula 1 calendar this year, at the Red Bull Ring - the new name for the A1 ring, the track layout is still the same as before - for the first time since 2003.

Austria was a consistent feature on the F1 calendar in the 1970s and 1980s at the famous Osterreichring but after the original circuit held its last grand prix in 1987, it wasn't until a decade later that the country returned to the sport at the new-look A1 Ring.

Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix

Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix

Belgium's F1 Grand Prix is hosted by the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps racecourse.

Spa-Francorchamps is popular among both spectators and drivers: it is challenging because of the Spa region's unpredictable weather, and because it is undulating and twisty yet very fast. The skill required and the good opportunities for overtaking have made it the scene of some memorable driving duels.
